スプロケットの基本
スプロケットに関しては、設計の基本を理解することが重要です。これには、チェーンのサイズと歯数が含まれます。歯数は、チェーンの種類と用途によって異なります。歯数を決定する際には、歯間の角度が少なくとも360度になるようにする必要があります。
サイズ
適切なスプロケットのサイズを選択する際には、考慮すべき要素が数多くあります。まず、スプロケットがダブルスプロケットかシングルスプロケットかを判断します。また、さまざまなサイズが用意されています。正確なサイズを決定するには、スプロケットの歯の溝と反対側の歯のスロット間の距離を測定する必要があります。この2点間の距離は、キャリパー直径と呼ばれます。
スプロケットのサイズは、チェーンの種類によって異なります。大型のスプロケットにはアームが付いていますが、小型のスプロケットには通常付いていません。アームは重量と慣性を軽減し、運転効率を高めます。また、スプロケットには開口部があり、組み立てや分解が容易になっています。さらに、強度を高めるためにメッキ加工が施されているスプロケットもあります。一部のスプロケットは、火炎焼入れまたは高周波焼入れされた部品を使用して製造されています。

材料
スプロケットは、チェーンと噛み合ってチェーンを動かす機械部品です。金属または強化プラスチック製で、通常は歯車のような形状をしています。特定の種類のチェーンに合わせて設計された歯車です。材質やピッチは異なりますが、ほとんどのスプロケットとチェーンのシステムは同じように機能します。
スプロケットには、シングルストランド、ダブルストランド、トリプルストランドの3つの基本タイプがあります。それぞれの長さと歯数は、様々な規格で規定されています。参考として、ISO-DIN規格を示します。ほとんどのスプロケットは合金鋼製で、歯部は表面硬化と焼き戻し処理が施されています。また、ハブと取り付け用のキーを備えています。
金属製スプロケットは、鋼鉄またはアルミニウム合金で作られます。鋼鉄は耐久性に優れていますが、アルミニウム製スプロケットは見た目が魅力的です。長距離走行には鋼鉄製スプロケットが最適ですが、カジュアルな走行にはアルミニウム製スプロケットの方が適しています。
スプロケットは、自動車や産業用途に加え、石油・ガス、繊維機械、計測機器、機械式伝動装置などにも使用されています。多くの種類のスプロケットは互換性があります。さらに、錆を防ぐために亜鉛メッキを施すことも可能です。スプロケットの亜鉛メッキの主な方法は、溶融亜鉛メッキと電気亜鉛メッキです。
スプロケットは通常、鋼鉄またはアルミニウムで作られています。その構造は歯車に似ていますが、歯車よりも間隔が広くなっています。また、歯車よりも長い距離をカバーできるため、動力伝達に使用できます。

チェーン駆動は、スプロケットを用いて移動体の速度を減速させる一般的な機械式伝動装置です。スプロケットは水平、垂直、または傾斜したピッチを持ち、通常は2個1組で使用されます。スプロケットの歯が駆動チェーンのローラーと噛み合うことで、速度が減速されます。これらのスプロケットは通常金属製ですが、プラスチックや複合材料で作られることもあります。
スプロケットの役割は、エンジンの出力軸から後輪へ動力を伝達することです。そのためには、フロントスプロケットがエンジンの出力軸と同じ速度で回転する必要があります。スプロケットは、駆動レール上または車両の前部に取り付けることができます。駆動レール上には、3つ目のスプロケットを取り付けることも可能です。さらに、フロントスプロケットは駆動チェーンを引っ張る役割も担っています。これにより、エンジンから後輪への動力伝達が促進され、バイクが前進できるようになります。チェーンのサイドプレートも、チェーンの張力を伝達する役割を果たします。
ブッシュは、チェーンがスプロケットを毎分数千回通過する際に加わる張力にさらされます。これにより、ブッシュ内部のピンに圧力がかかります。さらに、ピンはプレートからブッシュに伝わる曲げ力とせん断力にも耐えなければなりません。また、ピンは衝撃にも耐え、高い引張強度を備えている必要があります。ピンが摩耗した場合は、交換または修理が必要です。
スプロケットはチェーン駆動式の動作システムを駆動し、重い負荷を支えます。適切なスプロケットを選定することで、機器の損傷を防ぐことができます。そのためには、アセンブリの種類とシステム仕様に基づいて、適切なスプロケットを選択する必要があります。
維持する
スプロケットのメンテナンスは、オートバイのメンテナンスにおいて重要な部分です。これを怠ると、チェーンの交換頻度が高くなり、余分な費用がかかります。チェーンを定期的にメンテナンスすることで、3万マイル以上走行させることができます。一方、メンテナンスが不十分なチェーンは、わずか1万マイルしか持ちません。
スプロケットの点検は非常に簡単です。まず、チェーンを取り外して位置を合わせます。次に、異物がないか確認します。スプロケットに損傷が見られる場合は、交換が必要です。摩耗したスプロケットを交換できない場合は、新しいチェーンを購入することもできます。ただし、新しいチェーンは古いチェーンほど長持ちしません。
錆の兆候がないか確認してください。チェーンは湿気や熱にさらされることで錆びることがあります。ピンやローラーが錆びると、シールが損傷します。ピンやローラーが錆びている場合は、チェーンを交換する時期です。
チェーンの定期的なメンテナンスは、ねじれや滑りを防ぐために重要です。ねじれや滑りは、スプロケットとチェーンの過度の摩耗の原因となります。歯が摩耗すると、チェーンがスプロケットを適切に掴むことができなくなり、変速が困難になったり、激しい振動が発生したりします。
チェーンが数年経っている場合は、錆びを防ぐために数ヶ月ごとに注油することが重要です。また、注油前にチェーンを徹底的に洗浄して、清潔で潤滑された状態を保つことも重要です。非石油系のクリーナーを使用すると、蓄積した可能性のある汚れを取り除くのに役立ちます。チェーンを長期間使用する場合は、300～600マイルごとに洗浄する必要があります。
